Meet Mr McLuckie, Head of Languages

Head of Languages, Mr Aaron McLuckie

A language teacher since 2005, Mr Aaron McLuckie is a Central Coast local, born and bred. Graduating with a BA in Japanese and Indonesian, a Diploma of Education and a Diploma in Modern Languages (Mandarin), Mr McLuckie’s love of languages is infectious. We caught up the new Head of Languages at ÁñÁ«ÉçÇø to discover more.

Where did you work prior to ÁñÁ«ÉçÇø?
My first teaching post was at MLC School in Burwood where I was a Language teacher and Head of House. I was also Coordinator of Round Square which is an international organisation that connects schools around the world to assist students in developing competence, character and understanding.

More recently I was Head of Languages at St Augustine’s College in Brookvale.

Why teach languages?
My primary goal is to provide students with opportunities to develop as whole people who are able to thrive in the 21st century. Language acquisition provides us so many pathways and opportunities to access and embrace different cultures. Languages enable us to learn more about the world beyond our home. Understanding languages and cultures opens people’s hearts and minds to explore, to see different perspectives and to celebrate diversity.

What does a typical day for you look like?
I’m very lucky. I have the opportunity to teach great students, lead an amazing department and help inspire our staff. Often, we’re collaborating together to explore new and exciting ways we can present content and teach languages in the 21st century. There’s also a lot of paperwork and meetings!

You’ve been teaching for 15 years, what are some of your fondest memories so far?
Over the years, I've had five students place in the top five in NSW in the HSC. Seeing these students’ dedication and hard work pay off are highlights of my teaching career.

I’ve also been very fortunate to travel with students to all corners of the globe. Travel isn’t just about experiencing a different language and culture, it’s also about the development of the whole person. Sharing these experiences with students and assisting them to develop their independence and resilience is a unique and special part of my job.

What’s a common question you get from students?
I am always asked ‘How many languages do you speak?’ and ‘How can you speak so many languages?’.

And what’s your answer?
Well, I speak four languages – English included – and I tell students that I started just like they did. I began learning languages in Year 7 and I always really enjoyed it. Learning languages requires you to have perseverance and a methodical approach. I tell students that they will achieve their best outcomes when they are passionate about something.

What do you like most about your job?
I love being a teacher. It’s all about connections. Finding out what makes students tick, working with a whole range of students and abilities and building authentic relationships so I can assist students to achieve their full potential. It’s not just about their academic results but what we can do to help them be well-rounded adults.

What’s a fun fact about you people might not know?
I am a keen scuba diver. I’ve dived all around the world – the Galapagos, Mexico, Asia and Sydney harbour. My favourite kind of dive is one with sharks - I’ve seen Hammerheads, White Tips, Bulls and many more. I still remember my first ever dive. I was blown away by just how peaceful and relaxing it was.
