Environmental Sustainability

responsibility to care

Our commitment

We recognise our profound responsibility to care for the environment, for our students today and for the generations to come. Stewardship of our natural world is integral to our values of good character and practical wisdom, shaping the way we live, learn and lead.

Our commitment is expressed not only in aspiration but in meaningful action. In 2021, Grammar achieved 100 percent renewable electricity, with 33 percent generated onsite, an important milestone in our journey toward a more sustainable future. This was followed in 2023 by the development of a six‑year Sustainability Action Plan, supported by an external greenhouse gas assessment and reviewed by an academic expert from the University of Melbourne.

Putting initiatives into action

We are focused on reducing waste and water use, enhancing biodiversity, improving energy efficiency and expanding environmental literacy. Practical initiatives such as sourcing compostable packaging, trialling soft‑plastic recycling, establishing worm farms and composting systems, and launching Waste‑Free Wednesday in the Junior School, demonstrate our ongoing commitment to responsible resource use.

Student-centred leadership

Leadership is central to this work. Both the Junior School and Senior College have dedicated student sustainability leadership roles, empowering our students to champion initiatives, influence culture and model responsible decision‑making. Their voices and actions help embed sustainable thinking into daily school life.

An ongoing review of procurement processes ensures we prioritise suppliers who share our commitment to reducing environmental impact, reinforcing our responsibility to act ethically and thoughtfully.

At Grammar, sustainability is more than a commitment; it is another example of living and learning well, grounded in deep care for the world we all share.
