Year 3 Families Dive into Deep Learning at the Pond

Year 3 pond lesson

The pond became the hub of scientific discovery as during last term Year 3 students embarked on their Deep Learning Science Unit: Dive into the Pond. This immersive experience invited families to share in the excitement as students explored the fascinating world of living and non-living things.

Year 3 teacher Bronwyn Donnelly explained: “The pond investigation truly brought science to life for our Year 3 students. Watching them collaborate, making discoveries, and proudly sharing their findings with their families was wonderful. The Grammar pond isn’t just a backdrop, it’s a living classroom that inspires curiosity, creativity, and care for the environment.”

The Scientific Value of the Grammar Pond

The Grammar pond has a wealth of biodiversity and the proximity within our school grounds provides an authentic, ever-changing environment for observation and reflection. Students experience firsthand how ecosystems function, fostering curiosity, creativity, and a sense of stewardship for the natural world.

What Did Students Discover?

Through authentic investigation, students learned to identify and classify organisms found in and around the pond. From dragonflies to tadpoles and water fleas, they uncovered the secrets of ecosystems and habitats, gaining a deeper understanding of how all living things are interconnected. The unit also highlighted the importance of environmental care and protecting natural spaces.

How Did Learning Come to Life?

Guided by their teachers, students became scientists for the day. They observed pond life up close, sketched and photographed their findings, and used digital tools to record data. Short research tasks and collaborative discussions helped them connect their discoveries to key scientific concepts such as classification and environmental responsibility.

Showcasing Their Discoveries

The learning didn’t stop at the pond. Each student group created a digital presentation about their chosen pond creature using platforms like Canva, transforming their research into engaging documentaries. Families of Year 3 students were invited to view these interactive showcases and visit the pond, rounding off a vibrant outdoor classroom experience.
